[Map of the Soul: Persona] Streaming Guide

Streaming Tips

*These tips are accurate to the best of our knowledge. If you see an error, please let us know so we can fix it!

Charts to Target

  1. Billboard 200 – Billboard’s chart which ranks the top 200 albums.
  2. Hot 100 – Billboard’s chart which ranks the top 100 songs.

If you are not in the USA, can you use a VPN to contribute to Billboard’s charts?

Streams from outside of the USA will not be counted and no, VPNs are filtered by Billboard and Nielsen (the tracking service that Billboard uses). (Source)

When do these charts track streams?

They track streams starting on Friday to the end of the day on Thursday of the next week. The charts are publicly updated on Tuesday. (Source)

Are Premium streams weighted more than free streams?

Yes, this Billboard began doing this in June 2018. SEA (streaming equivalent albums) are counted as follows:

  • 1250 premium streams equal 1 album. (free trials are counted equally to premium streams for the length of the trial)
  • 3750 free streams equal 1 album.

Using free trials should count the same a paid premium subscription. Here are links to free trials.

*Youtube Red/Premium is the exception to this. Only the free version counts for Hot 100, and Youtube does not count at all for Billboard 200. (Source)

How many streams are equal to one sold track?

150 on-demand streams equal one sold track (song). This counts for Hot 100. (Source)

If I pause/skip part of the song, will the stream still count?

It is not known whether or not this would cause the stream to not be counted. (Source)

If I turn the volume down, will the stream still count?

You can turn the volume down, but it is recommended that it is not turned down below 50%. On Youtube, you can keep the website’s volume at 100% and turn down your device volume without effecting the validity of the stream. You can plug in a pair of earbuds or headphones if you want to decrease the volume without actually changing it on the device. (Source)

If I use a playlist, will the stream still count?

On Youtube, it is not recommended that you use playlists. On Spotify and other streaming sites, it should be okay to use a playlist. Put multiple copies of the title track (it is the most important) in the playlist spaced out between other songs from other albums or artists. (Source)

How I prevent my streams from being discarded due to spam playing?

The factors which the algorithms use to determine if a stream is “spam” or not are unclear. It is suggested that try as hard as possible to stream like a normal human so you are not mistaken for a bot. Do not stream the same song too many times in a row. Listen to other songs from other albums/artists when you can to appear more human. Take a break from streaming for a few hours and come back. (Source)

Does offline streaming count?

Offline streams do not count. The only exception is Spotify, offline streams do count on Spotify. (Source)

If you buy a song on iTunes and continuously play the track, does this count as streaming?

No, this does not count as streaming. If you have both an Apple Music subscription and an iTunes download, remove the download from your library to ensure you are streaming the subscription and unhide it later. (Source)

Will skipping ads on Youtube cause the stream to not be counted?

You can safely skip ads. Not skipping the ads will give BigHit ad revenue. It is suggested that you occasionally click ads and keep them open for a few seconds. (Source| Source)

Will streaming videos on Youtube in low quality cause the stream not to be counted?

Yes, it is recommended that the video be streamed at 480p or higher. (Source)

Will speeding up the video on Youtube cause the stream to not be counted?

Do not speed up the video. (Source)

Do I need to be logged into Youtube for my view to count?

No, you do not have to be logged into Youtube for your stream to count. It is suggested that you stay logged in. (Source)

Do I need to clear my cache/search history when streaming on Youtube?

There is no evidence to suggest that clearing the cache/search history effects whether or not the stream will be counted. (Source)

What is up with the Youtube comments?

There is no evidence that commenting certain words (ex. stream), phrases, or emojs will effect the validity of the view.

You can comment on the video, but do not spam comment.

How do I stream the music video on Facebook and why is this beneficial?

Here is a guide on how to stream a Youtube video on Facebook.

Views are less likely to not count when streamed via Facebook.

Can I stream using different browsers/devices at the same time?

It is debated whether or not this will cause your stream to be deleted. You can stream with different sites (ex. Spotify and Youtube) in different browser tabs/windows/devices without causing the stream to be marked as spam.

What method of streaming do you recommend?

Unfortunately, the fandom at large cannot come to a consensus on what streaming methods to use or discard. It is a topic a debate, but we do recommend that you be informed of several methods and have a method that you use. We will add some different streaming method options to this post as we see them.
